I just wanted to share the latest update on our little superhero from his mom. As some of you already know, he had surgery last week, and it was a pretty big one for him. Here is the update from Mama Losh.

"As referenced in this post about the ENT visit, Losh had surgery this week.

It was coincidental that the morning of surgery he was watching a cartoon where the main character went to the doctor. This character was scared and the show was about making them comfortable with visiting the doctor. Losh just shook his head and waved his hand in a “that’s ridiculous” kind of motion and told me he wasn’t scared. And he was right! This brave little boy was not scared of going to the doctor.. He was somewhat shocked that he needed surgery, but not scared.

So, here he is on the way to the doctor.. smiles as usual.

Inside the triage room, visiting with some of his friends.. Out of all of the nurses that recognize him and know him as a frequent flyer, I wish surgery wasn’t one.

All dressed and waiting on the doctors to take him back.. He still wasn’t scared.

I was a big ball of nerves. This was his twenty something surgery (Ive lost count) and he has done well with most of them. He has only had major issues with 2 of them.. Both of those times I was alone and both of those times he coded.. I was alone with him again this day and terrified out of my mind! I thank God that he did well though…

And hes done!

Poor guy ended up having a lot done. The doctor told me inside the consult room that out of all of the surgeries he has ever had that this one was going to be the worst. While back there, they did:

Tonsilectomy (removed his tonsils)
Uvulectomy (removed his uvula; the dangling bit in the back of the throat)
MLB (Scoped his airway and removed scar tissue from previous surgery)
Turbinate Trimming (inside his nose to make the airway bigger)
Ear exam (Making sure his tubes were ok)

The good news is that the doctor thinks nearly all of his airway issues are fixed.. The bad news is that there are some slight airway issues remaining that cannot ever be fixed. As he gets bigger and stronger it may become better, so all hope is not lost. The doctor believes he will be getting decannulated in the Spring after another sleep study. He is unsure if he will require CPAP, but thinks that he will not.

He was having trouble keeping his sats up and was intermittently on oxygen, but as the night wore on his sats increased.

He wanted to eat so bad, but it was just too painful to swallow. Thankfully the doctors took some steps to try to make his pain less (pillar closure being one), and had him on some pain relief medication.
He fell asleep holding onto the french fry.

The next morning rolled around and he was ready to go home, though the doctors disagreed. I had a little debate with the resident doctors regarding that though.. They didn’t want to send him home until he was eating and drinking some by mouth (even though he has a button). I told them if they were waiting for that, then they don’t realize how stubborn he is. We would have been there for days. Thankfully we were able to go home and having a button and trach is making his recovery easier than what most kids who have these operations go through.

Upon getting home he got all of his tube feeding supplies ready and had me feed him, and then he raided the fridge, found a Burger King kids meal, and heated it in the microwave (didn’t eat it tho), but he really wanted to. This kid loves food, so not being able to eat is tough for him.

He is glad to be home and he is doing well with recovery so far. Hes been resting a lot, and asking for pain medication like clock work. I just pray that this is the step needed to get him trach and machine free!
He's recovering well, but is still in pain. Poor little buddy. :( Thanks to everyone who has been keeping him in your thoughts and prayers over the last week, and for those who have been praying for his Unk 'Ney who is facing his own fight against serious illness right now. The family is so grateful to Team Losh!

Losh is now 8 years old and with a new age came a lot of new changes. Aloshua has been doing really well and we are so proud of his progress. His last illness was in January of 2013 (RSV), and though he required the vent and oxygen, he managed to overcome the illness on his own without needing to be hospitalized. Since, then he has been in good health.

Weight: 17.5kg He is the average size of somebody half his age.

ENT: These guys loved how great Losh has been doing. They did a short cap trial in the clinic and decided that he was doing well enough to be “capped”. This means that he now breathes through his nose/mouth instead of his trach. The cap comes off at nighttime, but he is having a sleep study in August with the cap on. Depending on how well he does with the sleep study will determine whether or not the trach can come out! This is HUGE news. In the meantime, Losh is enjoying the new found LOUD voice that the cap gives him. He enjoys hearing him talk, and other people are able to understand him much better.

Neurology: There is no change here. As long as his shunt is working properly and we don’t have any concerns about Tethered Cord or anything like that then we don’t see these guys often. We typically do yearly scans, but with Losh being on radiation risk (meaning they don’t want to scan him more than necessary) they opted to wait another year unless something comes up.

Rehab: Rehab deals with equipment needs (wheelchair, walkers, etc). However, our PT also deals with our equipment needs as we see them more often. We are in the process of growing his chair (making it slightly larger to accommodate some growth). We are also working on getting him an anterior walker. He has been using a posterior walker for many years and has done well with it, but as he advances we are working towards getting him to using arm crutches. The anterior walker mimics this more than the other. It also allows him to walk faster and more smoothly, and he thinks he is a hot-shot

Urology: The only recent testing he had was a renal ultrasound, but we are currently waiting on the results from that. He is getting more aware of his bladder urges and is able to tell me when he needs cath’d, though this isnt always. Due to some prescription hassles he has not been on his medication and there is no difference with or without it. We go soon for a checkup with Urology.

Pulmonary: We saw Pulmonary after we saw ENT and they were also quite impressed with how well he has been doing. Because he hasn’t needed the vent and is now capped, it was decided by insurance amongst other things that he will not be needing the ventilator in the home. Now, Aloshua hasn’t been ill since January, but at the same time, he hasn’t had an illness where the vent/oxygen was not required. This is a scary situation, but I have faith that with the cap things will be better (less trach related illness for one). We haven’t actually departed with the vent yet, but the supply company is already asking to schedule a pick-up date. If he does get sick and need use of a ventilator then we will get one back in the house.

Ophthalmology: We go soon for another visit with these guys. Losh’s vision has been improving with each visit and I expect it to with our next visit. The best thing as of late is that he has been able to recognize many colors (he is color blind in one eye).

Nutrition: We are working on securing a feeding pump to start continuous nighttime feedings. This will aid in him gaining weight, but because he eats by mouth it is a bit of a struggle to get insurance to approve this request. Thankfully, we work with a great nutrition team and they are writing fabulous letters stating why it is medically necessary that this happens.
Overall, there has been a lot of progress for Losh. He is still facing many challenges ahead, but he remains strong and will overcome each obstacle with a smile on his face because that is all he knows.
complete with a tree to put his presents under and even a Santa appearance. What
fun would a Christmas Party be without Christmas cards? If you
would like to send Losh a Birthday/Christmas card then here is your chance. His
birthday is on the 18th of this month so you still have (slightly)
plenty of time to get one sent out and to him in time for his Christmas Party.

Today is World Prematurity Day and it is beyond time for an update on Team Losh and our favorite little superhero. Let me start off by saying that Aloshua has been a very busy little boy since our last update. This year has been full of progress and a few very big milestones for him.

In September, we were able to celebrate a HUGE milestone with him. For the first time ever, Aloshua went an entire YEAR without being hospitalized. We had a few close calls, but he fought through his illnesses like a champion and was able to remain at home. We cannot even begin to tell you how amazing it was to celebrate this milestone with him. It was a very long time in coming... seven years, as a matter of fact. Our family is still celebrating, and probably will be for a very long time to come. :)

Because of his progress, Aloshua's doctors decided it was time to see how he would do without the ventilator. After checking everything out, they decided he needed one more surgery before we got to that point. So in October, Aloshua underwent his 22nd surgery. He had his adnoids removed, tubes placed in his ears, and part of his airway fixed. He came through with flying colors and was able to return home the same day.

Aloshua and Mommy before surgery

His recovery was probably one of the easiest he's ever had. He was up playing later that afternoon. But there were a few setbacks. Post-surgery, Aloshua began to aspirate liquids at an alarming rate. Every drink he took seemed to cause him some problems. He had a swallow study early this week, and is now on very thick liquids. If he continues to aspirate (liquid goes down the airway into the lungs instead of down the esophagus into the stomach), his doctors will halt all liquids by mouth until spring. The last thing anyone wants is for him to get aspiration pneumonia this winter and undo all of the progress he's made this year.

But don't fret because we have more BIG news!

Aloshua has now been off of the ventilator for the last FIVE WEEKS and is doing great! For the first time in his life, he's gained weight while off of the vent. He's been incredibly active and is doing such an amazing job handling breathing on his own, being a little boy, and gaining weight. This is such a huge milestone for him, and it's one we've all been so thrilled to celebrate with him. If he continues to do well, his doctors will assess whether he's ready for life without the trach in the spring. We're cautiously optimistic, and we've got our fingers crossed that he breezes through this winter with no complications.

Goodbye Ventilator!

Otherwise, Aloshua has had a great year. He's spent a lot of time out and about with his family, and has kept up really well. We're able to take him out without his face mask more often, and he just loves it. He's talking constantly now, and he's a rather bossy little thing! He loves telling his sister what to do. "No" has become a favorite word. And, sadly, he's learned the not so nice "Hut up" phrase (his way of saying shut up_ for all those times when he's annoyed at someone. We're trying to break him of that one, but he's reluctant to let it go. He eats two bowls of oatmeal for breakfast each morning, and keeps eating all day long.

Halloween Fun with his siblings

Surprisingly, he's beginning to overcome is aversion to pets. He's touched a goat, a chicken, and a cat... and he finally agreed to getting a puppy. Mallori has been with the family for a few weeks now, and Aloshua willingly pets her. He still freaks out when Aunt Fallon's two crazy dogs lick him, but he's gotten the hang of telling them to "get down NOW!" with as much conviction as he can muster.
He's learning new things every day. This is as nerve-wracking as it is inspiring. He's required to wear braces on his legs at night, but much to his therapist and mom's ire, he insists on taking them off in the middle of the night every night. For a little guy, he is as stubborn as they come. :)
A few weeks ago, he snuck out of bed early, got all of his supplies for the morning together, got his mom a Pop-tart, and laid it all out on the couch before he woke her up. Watching his progress this year has been such an amazing thing for his family, his friends, and everyone rooting for him. We cannot begin to thank all of you enough for your support, your prayers, and your commitment to our little superhero. We would not be here without all of you. So thank you for everything you do for him and for the thousands of special children just like him.

We're still fighting for our little superhero, and for children just like him. After a year of roadblocks, his insurance provider FINALLY agreed to begin covering the high-calorie nutrition supplements he needs to keep him growing. They still refuse to cover many of the items he needs, but with the help of his amazing medical team, we've been able to find viable alternatives as often as possible.

His mom has continued advocating for him and for children like him, and has spent much of the year working as a volunteer for the Arkansas Center for Respiratory Technology Dependent Children, attending conferences, networking with other parents, and helping parents new to life with a trach kid get settled into the rollercoaster they will experience.

This summer, Aloshua was able to attend his first conference for ACRTDC, and was in awe of all the children there who were just like him. His mom is looking forward to attending with him again next year. In the meantime, alongside his siblings, Aloshua continues to support the Arkansas Chapter of the March of Dimes as a Mission Kid, helping to raise awareness of the high costs of pre-term birth.

The March of Dimes has done amazing things for children like Aloshua. Because of their commitment to preemies and those with birth defects, Aloshua is alive today. This is a blessing our family will never be able to repay, but we work alongside Aloshua each day to say thanks the best way we know how: by helping others beginning the journey Aloshua has been on for the last seven and a half years. And we hope you will continue to join us as we fight for Aloshua, and for the millions of preemies like him.
Team Losh is proud to announce that we've partnered with Fandom for Preemies to raise funds for the March of Dimes via the March for Babies program!

From now until April 15th, authors can sign up to write a short story for the Fandom for Preemies Compilation. Anyone who donates $5 to the March of Dimes through our March for Babies team, or via the Fandom for Preemies Virtual Band from March 1st to April 15th will receive the compilation on May 1st, 2012.

For those of you not familiar with Fandom for Preemies, in November of 2010, the group raised over $5,000.00 for the March of Dimes via a compilation drive just like this. Over 100 authors participated, and hundreds from around the world donated to the March of Dimes as participants. The Compilation was over 1000 pages in length, and featured stories from authors in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

This year, they decided to sponsor Team Losh, who have been members of Fandom for Preemies or huge supporters of the effort from the beginning, as they march for babies, in an effort to support not only the March for Dimes, but the individual families and walkers who are advocating for children like Aloshua. Ayden, who is a captain for both Team Losh and the Fandom for Preemies effort, wanted to combine the two campaigns and allow Team Losh to help give back in a major way.

As Aloshua's family can tell you first hand, the March of Dimes can make a HUGE difference. Thanks in part to their work, Aloshua has overcome incredible odds for six years and is able to remain at home with his family. Thousands of children like him are not so lucky. Many premature infants never make it home from the hospital. Annually, one million infants die because of prematurity related complications like Aloshua experienced. It's Team Losh's goal to help ensure that as many of these precious children are given a chance at life as possible, and we are thrilled to join Fandom for Preemies as they help the March of Dimes realize this goal.

We hope that each and every one of you will join us in helping make a difference for the 543,00 babies like Losh that will be born early in the United States this year by making your $5 donation to the organization via Fandom for Preemies or Team Losh's March for Babies team!

This Saturday (the 18th) was the benefit dinner and concert, and Team Losh had a great time! Not only were we able to raise $1,211.00 for Aloshua, but because of you, we were able to feed everyone at Jacob's Place (the homeless shelter in Searcy), and make a large (and much needed!) donation of household goods (such as disposable plates, and silverware) and canned food to the Ronald McDonald House of Little Rock. That brings our total to over $5,000.00, or enough to cover one month of medication for Aloshua! Way to go team!!!

We have also been able to locate a mechanic who has volunteered to provide parts and his time to make repairs to Aloshua's van. The total cost for his family will now be less than $1,000.That's over $2,500.00 that his family no longer has to worry about. We're still working diligently with various organizations to find a replacement IPV machine, and have had some potential good news in that direction, as well. As soon as we have a solid plan, we will let all of you know. :)

Now, onto the big night!

Aloshua had a fantastic time listening to Broken Chains and Hunter West perform. Everyone kept commenting on how incredibly happy he looked, and he really did. The kid loves music, and he was completely awed that they were there for him. Broken Chains gave him the set of drumsticks Darren Grordon used after their set, and Hunter gave him the harmonica he'd used during his set. Let's just say that Losh was one awed little superhero. He's still carrying them around, and probably will be for a very long time. So we'd like to say a HUGE thank you to Broken Chains and Hunter for giving him such a great memory.

And we'd like to thank each and every one of you, too. Despite a few kinks in the day (our sound equipment donation guy was MIA, the flower shop where we'd ordered balloons closed earlier than they told us they would, and some of our volunteers were unable to make it), the night was a great success, and that's because of you! There were between 100 and 150 of you in attendance throughout the night, and you raised over $1,000.00. That's phenomenal!

We'd also like to thank: Sexton Foods of Bald Knob, Mayflower Foods of Searcy, Renee Reed and Hour of Power of Velvet Ridge, Barbara Louise Salon of Searcy, Which Wich of Searcy, Froyo of Searcy, Quattlebaum Music of Searcy, Mobile Monkey of Searcy, Clark's Drug Store of Bald Knob, Christy Yates, Beautiful Noise of Searcy, Renae Cote, everyone who volunteered their time to work the event or donated, and the Mark Pate Law Firm of Searcy for their generous support.

Below are some of the videos and pictures from the night (in no particular order)!
Admission is $5.00, kids 5 and under are free.

Dinner will be served beginning at 5pm. The menu includes: spaghetti and meatballs, cheese ravioli, garlic bread, dinner salad, fried chicken, potatoe salad, macaroni salad, pasta salad, baked beans, corn, green beans, chicken jambalaya, sausage jambalaya, pizza (pepperoni, cheese, sausage), as well as hot dogs & bologna sandwiches for the kids (or adults!) who prefer those items.

Desserts include: a variety of cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, & banana pudding, as well as items donated by members of the community.

Broken Chains will perform after dinner, followed by Hunter West.

Drop-off donations for the Ronald McDonald House, Make-a-Wish Foundation, and the March of Dimes will run for the duration of the evening, and information on each organization may be found at the Community Involvement table all evening.

Aloshua will be attending for those who would like to meet him, however, his family asks that you do not request to meet him if you have been or are currently ill. They have also requested that you use hand sanitizer and/or thoroughly wash your hands prior to meeting him, and that you don't feed him. This is not to be picky, but is for his safety and health. He is immunocompromised and gets sick very easily as a result. A minor cold for you could potentially result in Aloshua spending weeks in Intensive Care. He also has severe food allergies, as well as special food needs that must be closely monitored.

You will have the option of writing him a note for his mom to read to him after the event if you are unable to meet him. :)

Door prizes will be raffled off throughout the evening. Items include gift certificates and items donated by the following: Which Wich?, Froyo, Barbara Louise Salon, Hour of Power Fitness, Beautiful Noise, Thrills on Wheels, Renae Cote, Lily Rae, & Clark's Drug Store, as well as candy bags and activity books for children, gift certificates to JC Penny's, Burger King, Little Ceasars, and a stylish clutch full of costume jewelry. Bald Knob native and Team Losh member Fallon Glenn, writing as A.K. Morgen, will also donate an ebook copy (for Kindle or Nook) of her debut young adult novel, Fade, upon release from Noble Young Adult in April of this year.

Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase. They are $5.00 per ticket and will be at the admission table.

You can call Fallon at 501-348-0904 if you require any additional information.

We look forward to seeing you there!!
Aydenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06338048486195872260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624392975572961602.post-34160490083017904972012-02-15T18:17:00.000-08:002012-02-15T18:17:32.423-08:00The big day is this weekend!Hi everyone,

The online portion of the Team Losh fundraiser has officially ended, but Team Losh is still going strong. This Saturday, we will be at Bald Knob High School for the benefit dinner and concert, and we are so excited! Hunter West and Broken Chains will be performing for the community, there will be a ton of food, and we will have a lot of information for all of you on the Ronald McDonald House of Little Rock, the March of Dimes, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

If you would like to make a donation to any of the three organizations or would like to sign up to volunteer, we will have all of the required information to help you do so. You will also be able to donate pocket change to the March of Dimes in our "Pennies to Pounds" jars, as well as drop off pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, and refer the special children in your life to the Make-a-Wish program. We will also be collecting donations of household goods (such as napkins, paper plates, Lysol wipes, disinfectant spray, toiletries, etc) and canned goods and snack foods to drop off at the Ronald McDonald House of Little Rock after the event.

If you would like to sign up to walk with Team Losh at the March for Babies in Little Rock in April, or if you would like to sponsor Team Losh, you will have the opportunity to do so. You'll also have the opportunity to learn more about Aloshua's amazing experience at Give Kids the World through the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and about Baskets of Hope, an organization that provides gift baskets to children at Arkansas Children's Hospital through the Ronald McDonald House of Little Rock.

We are so excited to be able to bring together some of our favorite organizations and help make a difference not only for Aloshua, but for the other children in Arkansas that are just like him. Admission for the evening is only $5 (children 5 and under are free), and that includes food, drinks, desserts, and the concert immediately following dinner.

If you have questions, or need anything at all, please feel free to email us at teamlosh@gmail.com or to call us at 501-348-0904 or 501-247-6711.

We hope to see as many of you there as possible!
Dear Family and Friends,
I wanted to write to you all tonight to tell you how things are going for Aloshua and the Team Losh fundraiser. To be honest, when we started this fundraiser in November I thought it was a long shot. I had no clue that the community (both online and off) would be so supportive of our efforts. Throughout these last few months I have had the pleasure to meet and interact with many new faces, and catch up with some of old. I never thought that the fundraiser would actually make things happen, but boy have things happened!

- With the help of Stacey and the staff at Thrills on Wheels we were able to host our first event on January 22nd. Skate for Losh rasied a little over $1,000.

- The second event, hosted by the Homeschool 4H and Larry's Pizza on February 2nd raised $503!

- Our third event, which is a Benefit Dinner and Concert, is set to take place on the 18th of this month and we hope to report back with equally pleasing numbers. (If you are in the area we encourage you to come out, meet Aloshua, and enjoy some good food and entertainment, all while helping a little boy in need.)

Needless to say, I am in awe of everything that has been done in support of our family. Your kind, caring words mean so much to us and we want each and every one of you to know that without you, none of this would be possible. I cannot express my gratitude to you all. We want to thank each and every one of you for your time spent helping our cause, for the donations, and most of all, for the prayers offered on behalf of Aloshua.

On top of the events, Aloshua's GiveForward page has raised $575, and many private donations have been received, bringing the grand total raised to a little over $3,000. While that is an outstanding amount and we thank all of those who have made this possible, we are still far from our goal. Here is where the nerves set in. Can we reach our goal?

When starting the fundraiser we had 3 specific goals in mind. These were to fund Aloshua's Tobramycin, purchase or repair Aloshua's IPV machine, and repair the family vehicle that is used to transport him to the hospital for his numerous monthly appointments and to his 6 weekly therapy sessions. We have not met any of these goals yet, but we are close. Through the fundraiser, we have met individuals and organizations who have helped and are helping find discounts and programs that will aid in the cost of these items. That means, if all works out, we will not have to raise the entire $18,000. That is great news, but much still remains left to be done. We are continuing to ask for your support and help in spreading the cause.

The Team Losh Compilation has officially been released! If you made a donation, but have not received it as of yet, please email us and let us know! It'll make it much easier to find you in our handy spreadsheet system!

Aloshua and his mom and siblings spent a bit of time at the local park yesterday, and had a lot of fun. Aloshua also got a haircut recently. He looks so grown up now!
If you're wondering why he's half-naked in so many of his pictures lately, there is actually a reason for it that doesn't involve laziness. One of the medications Aloshua needs in a specific form requires approval from the head insurance honchos, and they took nearly a month to approve the patch refill this time. Since it's something he absolutely has to have for the health of his kidneys, his urologist had Courtney give him the less Aloshua friendly liquid version until the head honchos got the request approved.

The liquid, however, is really harsh on Aloshua. He gets easily overheated while on it. With him already running a fever and the medication adding to the misery, he's been more or less naked until the approval for the patch came through and Courtney could stop giving him the liquid again. The patch refill finally came through yesterday, though, and Aloshua said good-riddance to the liquid for another six months (aka until it's time to get another approval and the insurance people take forever to do it).

Larry's Pizza Event:
On February 2nd, the Homeschool 4H club in Searcy, Arkansas will be hosting a fundraiser for Aloshua at Larry's Pizza in Searcy. From 4:30pm to close, Larry's will donate $1 of every buffet sold, as well as all tips, to Aloshua. A big thank you to Amelia and the 4H Club for putting this together for Aloshua. We hope to see some of you there!

Team Losh Compilation:
The Compilation has been sent to authors for review before being sent out to everyone, and it looks great. We are so excited to get it out to all of you! You can expect it to start hitting your inbox on January 31st. Please remember that we need you to forward your receipt or your email address and name to us so we can make sure that you get it! This is particularly important if you donated at an event, by mail or through GiveForward as we may not have your email address.

Test Results:
Aloshua had a lot of tests at his Pulmonology appointment last week and a swallow study with ENT today. We were hoping for good results from all of it, but they just were not in the cards this time around. While the pseudo infection hasn't gotten any worse, Aloshua has a staph infection in his trach and will start another antibiotic for that today. This isn't unusual for Aloshua. He gets staph very easily and is on contact precautions anytime he's hospitalized for his safety simply because he does get the infections very easily and they can get pretty bad for him. So, while discouraging, that news wasn't entirely unexpected.

The swallow study is a different matter altogether, however. During the swallow study, he did great with the solid foods, but aspirated (the liquid went into his lungs instead of into his stomach) both regular and nectar thick liquids, so he has to be put back on honey thickened liquids. He hasn't had to have thickened liquids since 2008, so we were not expecting that at all today. It's a little discouraging because it is a step back by about 3 years, but it's in his best interest, so naturally that's all we need to know to make it happen.

Hopefully the next round of tests will look better and he'll get some good news. It's definitely long overdue for him. But despite all of the recent setbacks and not feeling well, he's been in very high spirits and has been keeping his mom and grandma on their toes as per usual. We can't ask for more than that. :)

The Information Table.

Sunday was the big night: our first community fundraising event for Aloshua, and we weren't at all sure how it would turn out. We got notice about an hour before the event that the weather was supposed to get really bad. Tornadoes, hail, strong winds, torrential rains, flood advisory... in other words, a typical January storm in Arkansas. Despite the incoming storm, we loaded up and headed to Thrills on Wheels for Skate for Losh.

Aloshua and his brother, Kaia, were excited all day about getting to skate. Kaia, protective brother that he is, informed us as we were preparing to leave that he was going to push Aloshua around first, and he was going to tell everyone that they couldn't play with him unless they used hand sanitizer first. While the adults got things ready to go, he and Aloshua practiced telling people to, "Please use hand sanitizer or don't touch my brother." Perhaps not the most diplomatic way of asking, but you have to give him credit for trying, right? :)
The event started at 4:30 and ended at 6:30. Despite the weather, about 55 people were in attendance. We raised $514.47, which was completely awesome. At the end of the night, the amazingly generous Barry Vuletich approached Aunt Fallon and informed her that he wanted to match whatever was donated, bringing the night's total to an amazing $1,014.47. Way to go, Team Losh!!!

Thrills on Wheels was completely amazing through the entire event. We honestly cannot say enough about how great they were to everyone in attendance, and how helpful they were to those of us working the event. If you haven't been to Thrills on Wheels yet and live in the area, you definitely need to check it out.We would love to go back and do another event sometime later this year, and are thrilled to work with the organization in planning this.

The kids played games for door prizes such as a prize pack, and free ice cream, and the lucky winners were Tony, Carly, Jaedyn and Trinity. At the end of the night, all of the adults in attendance lined up so Aloshua could randomly select a winner for an estimated $40.00 worth of prizes, including a gift certificate donated by KJ's Family Restaurant in Judsonia, Arkansas. He did not support this plan and tried to choose himself. Everyone got a good laugh about that, and then we decided we'd probably have more luck if Aybra handed out the goods. She selected Sean as the lucky winner. Congratulation, guys!
As we loaded up, the storm really hit, and it was ferocious. Hail, strong winds, heavy rain. The roads flooded quickly, but we all made it home safely with two very tired little boys asleep in the backseat. We cannot wait until Team Losh's next event, a benefit dinner and concert in Bald Knob next month, and we hope to see all of you there!

A huge thank you to everyone who was in attendance, to Thrills on Wheels for sponsoring the event, and to Barry Vuletich for his generous matching donation. With your help, we've raised over $3,000.00 for Aloshua's medical fund, and have gathered over $1,000.00 worth of prizes. Team Losh is blessed to have each and every one of you on the team!

We have this theory that it's never good news when the doctor calls us with results from Aloshua's tests. Today was no exception. His pulmonologist called today with his X-Ray results, and as usually happens when we get those calls, it wasn't good news.

Aloshua's diaphragmatic hernia has reopened (which we knew), but pulmonology was concerned about it, so he has been referred to the surgery doctors.

He's had the hernia pretty much from birth, but in 2009, he got really sick and was in a lot of pain. We took him to the local ER and Urgent Care, and they kept telling us it was just a respiratory infection. We knew better so when he started throwing up (which he's not supposed to be able to do at all), we rushed him to Children's.

Turns out, that little niggling feeling we were having that something was seriously wrong was... well, right. His stomach and bowels had shifted through the hernia into his chest cavity and had gotten completely clamped off, causing all kinds of havoc in there.

An army of surgeons and ER doctors descended on us in the ER and rushed him back to surgery in the middle of the night. They weren't sure they were going to be able to save the bowels (which is really bad), and cautioned us not to expect a miracle. Thankfully, they were wrong and we got another miracle. They got him into surgery in time and were able to save the bowels, repair the damage, and close the hernia as best they were able with his shunt drainage tube in the way. It was pretty touch and go for a while there though, and we were all scared we were going to lose him.

So, the surgeons took a look at the X-Rays today and didn't see any really drastic changes, but there's cause for concern that the stomach and intestine/bowels may shift through it into the chest cavity again. Since his diaphragm is partially paralyzed already and he's already been through so much, they don't want to do another surgery on it until they have to do so though. So, we're just going to keep monitoring him closely for now as we have been, and at the first sign of stomach problems, they'll take him in for surgery.

Aloshua is nothing if not a champion, and if we've learned anything from him in the last six and a half years it's that we can do this. We can do this, and we will.

In the meantime, we're going to continue on as we have been, and hope you will all join us. We'll be at Thrills on Wheels in Searcy for Skate for Losh on Sunday at 4:30pm, and would love for you to come out, say hello, watch us fall (a lot), and meet Aloshua. :) We'll be there until 6:30pm and Aloshua is so excited to go "state" with everyone (which means he fully intends to make as many people as possible take him and his wheelchair for a spin around the rink)!

Thrills On Wheels is located at the end of Main Street, just over the highway 67 overpass in Searcy, Arkansas. From Highway 67, use Exit 42. After exiting, go south 1/2 mile, and you'll see it on the left.

He has been running a fever and dealing with an increase in secretions again. With a pseudomonas infection like his, this is pretty standard operating procedure when off of the antibiotics. He'll feel pretty good and have no problems for a few days, and then will run a fever and have a lot more "junk" in his lungs. This is why he's on the antibiotics long term. There is no cure for pseudomonas. Once you have the infection, you have it for good. The antibiotics prevent the infection from progressing (or becoming fatal), but they're taken in 28 day cycles so the patient does not build up a resistance, thus rendering the antibiotics ineffective.

Some days during the off cycle, he does great, others he does not. It's touch and go. He's still home with his family though, instead of in the hospital, and that is a great thing. You can't ask for much more than that.

We have a lot of fundraising updates for you today!

It's been another crazy few days here for Team Losh. We're in the midst of confirming details for the benefit concert and dinner for Aloshua, and things are quickly beginning to take shape.

Right now, we are looking at February 18th from 5pm to 8pm in Bald Knob, so save the date everyone! It will be a night of food, fun and music, all for a $5.00 donation to a very worthy little boy. You can't beat that, right? We will post confirmed dates, places, times, performers, and everything you will need to know as soon as we have everything cemented.

If you are interested in volunteering at the event, we would love to have you on board! We need several volunteers to help with set up, serving, clean up, and admissions, and you will be given a free Team Losh t-shirt as well as free admission to the event for your help. You can email us at teamlosh@gmail.com if you're interested in volunteering.

As far as totals go... you guys have donated over $2000.00 in cash and nearly $1000.00 in prizes! We are working on getting all of the new raffle prizes posted to the blog.

Submissions from authors have been pouring in and the compilation is beginning to take shape. we are so excited to get it out to all of you. We have had some really phenomenal submissions, and think you will all enjoy the tales authors have donated to the compilation. Remember, all you have to do is donate $5.00 to Team Losh before February 15th to get the compilation (and a raffle entry).

Like you, those of us working behind the scenes at Team Losh are committed to his needs. We're keeping track of every donation received as well as donor information when provided. To ensure that the funds go to his medical expenses, we've ensured that Aloshua's mom, Courtney, is the only one with access to PayPal, the P.O Box, the bank account, or that can be sent funds via Give Forward. So rest assured, if you donate, your donation will go directly to his mom for his expenses.

Aloshua's mom has had several meetings this week in regard to insurance woes. There has been a bit of good news from several organizations that advocate for patients like Aloshua with insurance providers. As we've learned intimately, it truly can be a one step forward and two steps back process though.

After meeting with the Spinal Cord Commission yesterday about Aloshua's needs, Courtney received a phone call from Aloshua's supply company informing her that insurance has repeatedly denied to pay for the supplemental nutrition he receives via G-Tube and he will no longer receive them. It was an unexpected and disheartening decision, to say the least.

Aloshua has a severe case of failure to thrive and is below the 5th percentile for boys his age. This means that over 95% of boys his age weigh more than he does. Because he cannot maintain or gain weight naturally because of his medical problems, he requires additional nutrition to ensure that he does not lose weight.

The average adult needs only 1,500 to 2,000 calories a day. Aloshua typically takes in anywhere from 3,500 to 4,500 calories a day, depending on how well he eats on his own. 2,500 of those calories come from supplemental nutrition provided via G-Tube feedings. Now, most of us would gain weight rapidly were we to consume that many calories a day. Aloshua does not. On good days, the most we hope for at those intake levels is that he maintains his current weight of 33 pounds.

So, Aloshua's mom and medical team has another insurance battle to fight. In the meantime, they're trying to decide on an alternative source of nutrition so he does not have any setbacks while the decision is appealed. It's a frustrating process, but we have high hopes that the next rounds of appeals will be successful, at least on the nutrition front, and we can resume the Scandi-Shake supplements as soon as possible.

Thank you again to everyone who is helping us ensure that Aloshua has access to the treatment interventions he needs to thrive. Your commitment to Aloshua and children like him who cannot advocate for themselves is a true blessing.
Having a support system in place can be the difference between falling apart, and meeting each new obstacle as it comes. For families of critically ill children, that support often comes not only from family, friends and the community, but from other parents facing the same obstacles, and celebrating the same milestones as your family, as well as from non-profit organizations and charities that work with children just like ours.

Many of these organizations understand exactly what having a critically ill child can entail: they were started by the families of just such a special child and have gone on to become some of the leading supporters of programs and resources for children and families facing similar medical crises.

Since Aloshua's birth, his family has been blessed to become involved with several of these charities. We'd like you to meet these organizations and consider how you can help ensure they're able to continue operating in your communities.
Roosevelt to help fight polio. In the years since, the March of Dimes has transformed into an international organization that performs research and provides research grants and opportunities for medical personnel in an attempt to eliminate prematurity, neural tube defects, and pregnancy issues that put children at risk. Globally, there are 13 million children born prematurely every year. The March of Dimes is fighting to change that through research programs and education and awareness activities in communities across the globe. The March of Dimes is also an excellent resource for anyone with questions about premature birth, neural tube defects such as spina bifida, state and federal policies that help support mothers and infants and so much more.
The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia in 1974 after Philadelphia Eagles' player Fred Hill's daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. In the years since, RMHC has grown into an international charity with over 300 houses established around the world. These houses are typically located near pediatric hospitals and provide a home away from home for the families of critically and terminal ill children, allowing those families to stay together to support their ailing child or sibling.

Families are provided a room, showers, laundry facilities, kitchens, and all the little comforts of home, and no one is turned away if they are unable to pay the requested $10 to $20 a night rent (which goes toward keeping each individual house up and running). While McDonald's is a major donor of the organization, the organization itself is its own entity and the majority of donations come from a variety of local businesses and private donors. In many states, RMHC also operates Care Mobiles, providing free or low cost dentistry services to low-income and at-risk children.

You can help RMHC by making a donation here, or at your local Ronald McDonald House, by collecting the tabs from soda and soup cans and turning them in to your local Ronald McDonald House to recycle, by volunteering at your local House (group opportunities, such as cooking dinner for families of the house or completing a room make over at some House locations, are available), or by participating in one of the numerous local, national or international events established to support Ronald McDonald House Charities. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was created by Alexandra Scott, a child diagnosed with neuroblastoma (cancer) who wanted to give back to the people who helped her by opening a lemonade stand after undergoing a surgical procedure at age four. As promised, when Alex was released from the hospital, she opened her lemonade stand with the help of her siblings and raised over $2,000.00 for her hospital.

By the time Alex passed away in 2004 at age 8, she had helped raise over 1 million dollars to help benefit childhood cancer research. Since her death, her family has continued the tradition, and Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has become an international organization that has raised over $50 million to support childhood cancer research through grants and similar programs.
Chris had always wanted to be a police officer, and as his health declined, Tommy Austin was determined to make his wish come true.

In April of 1980, the Arizona Department of Public Safety banned together to grant Chris's wish and provided him with a day of police activity. In May of that year, Chris passed away, but his wish started a legacy that has endured. Since 1980, the Make a Wish foundation has granted 216,458 wishes for children, including Aloshua (whose family spent a week in Florida in 2010, meeting Mickey Mouse and hanging out at Give Kids the World and Disney).

Make a Wish grants wishes for children from age 2 and a half to age 18 who have been diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition. Once a child has been referred and deemed eligible, the Make a Wish foundation works with private donors, businesses and organizations around the world to fund the child's wish, no matter how big or small.

You can get involved with Make a Wish by donating here, by volunteering your time and talents to Wish kids, by donating airline miles to fly Wish kids to their locations, or by Adopting a Wish. Give Kids the World Village was created in an effort to grant the wish of a young girl, Amy, who was being treated for leukemia. She wanted to visit the theme parks in Orlando, but because it took so long to arrange travel plans for her, Amy passed away before her wish could be granted. After hearing her story, Henri Landiworth was determined to ensure that such a wish was never granted too late again. He started the Give Kids the World Village, a 70-acre non-profit resort specifically designed for children with life threatening illnesses to enjoy cost-free vacations.

As mentioned above, Aloshua was able to go to Give Kids the World Village in 2010 and his family fell in love with the resort. Each family is given their own themed villa (often designed like mini castles, mushrooms and much more) for their stay and have access to magical, storybook venues for the duration of their stay such as a dinosaur themed golf course, a life-sized Candyland park, an ice cream shoppe that serves ice cream for breakfast, a fairytale castle, a petting zoo, the Park of Dreams (water garden and wheelchair accessible pool), and much more. The park provides everything from transportation to themed parties every night of the week to meals for guest families, as well as access to Orlando attractions big and small.

You can donate to Give Kids the World here, volunteer to help out at the park or to provide services to the children and families here, get your corporation or group involved here, or participate in special events.

These are only a few of the charities working for children who, like Aloshua, face life threatening obstacles many of us will never endure. Team Losh is proud to support these organizations, and we hope that you will join us in helping bring comfort to those who most need it by getting involved in one of these organizations, or others like them.

As the saying goes, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
We'd like to take a few minutes to introduce the important people in Aloshua's life to you.

Mom: Courtney

Aloshua's mom, Courtney (age 26), is a single mother of three. She's also a full time college student just a few months from graduating with her BS in Criminal Justice, an advisory board member for the Arkansas Center for Respiratory Technology Dependent Children, an Arkansas Children's Hospital volunteer, and one of the primary education teachers at her church. Her friends like to call her super-mom. Not only does she care for the children, she home-schools them as well.

In her spare time, she bakes enough goodies to feed an army, fixes up the old house she and the kids share, plans little parties for the kids and their friends, and is training for a marathon or two. Courtney is also a lifestyle blogger. You can catch up on her daily life at: http://lifeasaconvert.blogspot.com/
Brother: Kaia

Kaia is Aloshua's slightly older brother... he's only 9 and a half months older and, like Losh, was a preemie. He was born at 29 weeks gestation and had no problems at all. In fact, everyone was stunned that he came home from NICU after only 3 weeks and no serious problems!

Kaia is seven now and in the second grade. He takes his big brother role seriously and patiently teaches his younger siblings everything he thinks a little kid should know. Kaia attends speech therapy once a week, and is our karate superstar. He loves video games, magic tricks, spy gear, spending time with his Nanny Fallon in Little Rock, hanging out with his grandpa, and listening to music. He's our sensitive little boy. He takes things to heart and is incredibly compassionate and loving. When he grows up, he wants to be Edward Cullen or a tiger...he's not sure which is better yet.

Sister: Aybra (Abby)

Aybra (or Abby) is three years old and, like Losh and Kaia, was a preemie. Abby was born at 26 weeks gestation and weighed only 1 pound 9 ounces. Unlike Losh, however, Aybra breezed through being a preemie with relatively few problems. She's now three years old and claims she is Aloshua's big sister. She also swears that she's five years old.

Aybra loves jewelry, boots, Dora, driving her brothers insane, and her Uncle 'Ney. The girl is a complete character, and blurts out the most random, off the wall stuff. She keeps us laughing with her antics and divatude. Aloshua is, hands down, her best friend in the entire universe, and she loves hanging out with him, taking him for spins in his wheelchair, or playing imaginative games with him. Her brothers, and cousin Jayden, take her role as the baby in the family seriously and spoil her rotten.

Grandma: Debbie

Super-mom though Courtney may be, it's virtually impossible to raise three normal, healthy kids alone. Add a child like Aloshua to the mix, and even super-mom needs a little help. Courtney's mom, Debbie (Grandma Debbie to the kids) lives with Courtney and the kids and helps her out. The kids love living with their grandma, who fully believes that it's her job to spoil them rotten.

Debbie works full-time at a convenience store in Bald Knob, and otherwise spends her time with the kiddos, reading her favorite romance novels, or playing on Facebook.

Other important people in Aloshua's life include Aunt Jessica, Uncle CJ and cousin Jayden, Great-Grandma Lois, Grandpa Jerry, Uncle Courtney, and Aunt Fallon, as well as a host of extended family members who have made it their mission in life to spoil Aloshua and his siblings completely rotten.Aydenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06338048486195872260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624392975572961602.post-51639123998678354862012-01-03T08:02:00.000-08:002012-01-03T08:02:42.222-08:00Happy New Year!Team Losh has started off the New Year with a bang.

As the last post here noted, we've finally gotten all of the details hammered down for the Skate for Losh fundraiser at Thrills on Wheels in Searcy, AR! Those of you locally who would like to join us are welcome to do so. We'll be there from 4:30 to 6:30pm with Aloshua if he's up for it, and would love for you to come out and meet him. His mom's only request is that, for obvious reasons, you pass on the event if you're not feeling well.

Aloshua was also featured in a news article in The Daily Citizen in today's edition. Subscribers can view it online at: http://thedailycitizen.com. Those who aren't subscribed but would like to see it can purchase 24 hour access for .75 cents (Visa/Mastercard only) on the website. Courtney has promised to send a picture or two along to post here for all of you as well.

Aloshua spent the 1st with family and lots of food. For a kid who doesn't gain weight, he sure can eat. As his mom pointed out to everyone the other day, you can tell when he has a plate of food in front of him because he's smiling in those pictures instead of giving us the hands:

We get the hands a lot. That said, the kiddo is not camera shy at all. He just has to be in the mood for a picture, or behind the camera:

He and his sister are always stealing the camera to take pictures of themselves, the walls, random objects...anything in their line of sight is fair game. These two are so cute together. Abby is three, but swears the Losh is her little brother (she also swears that she's five). Naturally, he takes offense to this and they argue. A lot. In true kid fashion, they love each other again thirty seconds later. They've been like this since Abby came home. In fact, one of the first things I (Fallon) remember about her being home from NICU was hearing both of them screaming bloody murder and walking into Aloshua's room to find their hands clenched in each others hair, pulling away while Aloshua's nurse and Courtney tried to pry them apart. Both were screaming and crying, but neither was willing to let go first. Kids, right? :)

Aloshua has been in high spirits, and has been enjoying his Christmas gifts. Since he can't walk, he usually crawls everywhere around the house since it's easier than <strike>convincing his sister to stop bugging him for a turn</strike> navigating the wheelchair all the time. A few months ago, however, someone gave the kids a little skateboard, and he discovered the ability to roll his way around the house. For Christmas, he wanted a skateboard, so Santa looked everywhere for one. He now gets around like this:

Score one for ingenuity, right? Now we just need to find the boy a helmet that will fit.

We hope you are all enjoying the New Year, and are spending your vacation time surrounded by loved ones and laughter.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this holiday so very special. Your support, kind words, thoughts, prayers and encouragement have been a true blessing, and we are so honored to have such an amazing group cheering Aloshua on from all around the world.

We've been a bit slow with updating through the holidays, but we do have some news to share with all of you! We spoke to a reporter at a local paper on Friday about Aloshua and what Team Losh is all about. It will run after the first of the year, so stay tuned for that! We're also in the process of planning a benefit dinner and concert for February, and the skating fundraiser for late January. I promise those details are coming! We just want to ensure we have everything all ready to go before posting.

We will post updated totals in the coming days, as well as other ways you can help kids like Aloshua, and more holiday fun from our little superhero.
You've also helped sign up 19 authors (fandom and original fiction authors alike) and 6 of you have signed on to challenge yourselves in the virtual 5k. Congratulations and thank you so much from everyone here at Team Losh!

Aloshua has had an up and down weekend. He's feeling okay, but he's really "junky" and coughing so much, it's aggravated his airways and he's coughing up blood from his trach again. Despite it, he's been in high spirits as usual. He was a little ticked at grandma last night for making him go to bed, but has otherwise been his angelic self. He and his siblings have been making and decorating ornaments for their trees (yes, plural!) and for yours!

Last week, Aloshua received a card from Ashlyn and had a blast carrying it around and showing everyone while he was at the doctor. Here's a little video of him doing knock knock jokes with the card. :) Thank you, Ashlyn!

Kaia, Aloshua's older brother, has always been a big part of Team Losh. He just adores his little brother and loves helping take care of him or buying him things. The other day, he decided he wanted to buy a painting from the Art Gallery. Courtney attempted to convince him that he could have it for free since it was one of his, but he was adamant that he was buying it with his allowance. He's such a sweetheart. Here's a little video of him talking about the fundraiser and the "surprise" coming to the Gallery (ornaments). The ornaments will post to the Gallery page shortly, so be sure to check it out and reserve yours :)

We also want to remind all of you to sign up for the March for Babies with us. You do not have to live in Arkansas to participate as part of Team Losh. You can sign up for your local event and still join Team Losh. Or, of course, you can sign up for another team. Hi everyone!

Every year, Aloshua and his family participates in the March for Babies, and we would like to invite all of you to join us for the 2012 event! For those of you not familiar with the event, the March for Babies is an awareness walk that raises money to support the March of Dimes as they work to prevent prematurity and birth defects such as spina bifida, which Aloshua has. Participating is simple: visit http://www.marchforbabies.org/team/teamlosh and sign up to walk with us. Even if you are not in Arkansas, you can still join Team Losh and participate in your local event as a member of the team.

The walk is simple. Most are only two miles, and you are encouraged to bring along your family, friends and children to play games, get to know others in your area working to end prematurity, and to walk with you.

As a member of Team Losh, you're in a unique position to help prevent premature birth globally. You will be able to raise funds directly from your personal page on the March for Babies website if you choose to do so. If you'd rather not participate in the fundraising portion of the walk... that's just fine too! We would still love to have you on the team, helping us raise awareness!

Globally, there are 13 million children born prematurely each year. Of those 13 million, 1 million do not survive. Hundreds of thousands of others, like Aloshua, will suffer serious life-long complications such as chronic lung disease, cerebral palsy, and developmental disabilities.

I work with the families of premature infants daily and I can tell you that your help is not only needed, but that it can make a difference. There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching a family lose their child before that child has ever had a chance to live, and it is up to us to help ensure no other family has to say goodbye to their child far too soon.Premature birth is preventable, and the March of Dimes has already helped reduce the number of children born too early. In fact, the rate of pre-term birth has been declining steadily in the last few years thanks to the efforts of the March of Dimes and partner organizations!

Can't walk? You can still help by making a donation directly to the Team Losh page at: http://www.marchforbabies.org/team/teamlosh.Your donation goes directly to the March of Dimes and will be used to fund research and education initiatives around the world. If you are unable to donate via credit, debit or paypal, please send your cash, check, or money order donation to:
and we will deliver it, along with all donations collected, the day of the walk. You can make your check or money order out directly to the March of Dimes (or include a note to let us know that it's designated for the March of Dimes).

It's been a busy post-holiday week for everyone behind the scenes at Team Losh.

In 14 days, you've donated $500.00 in cash and over $400.00 (estimated) in prizes. You've also bought $200.00 worth of Team Losh products from the store! Fifteen authors and two banner-artists have signed up to contribute to the compilation, and over 1,300 of you have stopped by the blog to find out more about Aloshua. That is phenomenal, and Team Losh and his family are amazed at the outpouring of support you have given since learning about his condition and the family's dilemma.

We still need your help though! We're only at about 2% of our goal, and the deadline is a month and a half away. $500.00 will cover only 3 days of the medication (4,500 for 28 days of medication averages a little over $160.70 a day) Aloshua needs, so we still have a long way to go!

Want to help but can't afford to donate? Email us at teamlosh@gmail.com and let us know what you'd like to do. We fully understand how difficult this time of year can be on everyone, and would be more than happy to welcome you to the Team, no matter if you are donating an item, entering the raffle, designing a product, writing a story, spreading the word, or something else altogether. There is plenty for everyone to do and we won't turn away your help.

If you write and have not signed up to write for the compilation, we'd like to encourage you to do so. There is no length requirement. Your piece can be as long or as short as you want it to be. It can be fanfiction, poetry or original. Authors and banner artists will receive the compilation free of charge for their assistance and will also be entered into random drawings for one of 8 Starbucks gift-cards.You can find out more about the compilation and sign up here.
As for Aloshua himself... he is doing really well this week. He's been in a terrible mood since finding out on Sunday that he had to go see his new neurosurgeon today. He doesn't have bad days often, but when he does... he can be a handful. The appointment went well, however, and he left in a better mood than he arrived. He even offered to help catch the goldfish in the tank at the clinic for his mom's dinner. (Boy humor... you gotta love it!)
The MRI they did a couple of weeks ago showed a new cyst on his spine, but as of now, it's not a cause for major concern. His shunt looks great and, aside from the new cyst, his spinal cord is looking really good too. He may eventually need surgery for tethered cord again (there's some concern with the cyst growing so soon after his first tethered cord surgery), but for now, he's good to go in that department!

One of the neuro nurses who has been with him since birth confessed today that she never thought he'd be where is right now. As she told the neurosurgeon today, compared to where he was even two years ago... his progress has been awe-inspiring. He still has a long way to go, but he has come so far already. It's been an absolutely amazing experience to have watched him overcome so many obstacles over the years, and his nurse's words today were a wonderful reminder of just how blessed all of us have been with Aloshua.

After his appointment, he went out to lunch with the family and charmed the pants off of everyone in the restaurant. A gentleman named Argenty gave him and his siblings a handful of suckers, and the sweetest couple asked the waiter for permission to pay for his lunch. The waiter ended up just giving him and his siblings their meals for free.

He received a card from a dear friend today as well and has been carrying it around and showing everyone all day. He's incredibly proud of it. (Thanks, Ashlyn!!)

Thank you, everyone, for everything you have done in the last 14 days for Aloshua!
